My breast cancer journey began in 2022 when I finally went for a routine annual mammogram after intentionally skipping my 2021 exam due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, I was a busy mother, wife, and professional, balancing my family and career while also trying to prioritize my health. Despite leading an active lifestyle and feeling good about my overall health, as the mammogram technician wrapped up, I sensed something wasn’t right. It wasn’t long before I received a message in my “MyChart” app suggesting I have a 3-D mammogram followed by a biopsy and an MRI-guided biopsy. The tests confirmed what I feared—I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
My world came to a halt, but after the initial shock, I knew I had to face the challenge head-on, not just for myself but for my family. I quickly assembled a team of (all female) doctors, and together we devised a treatment plan. I underwent a double mastectomy to remove the tumor, and by the grace of God I was spared from chemotherapy and radiation. Through it all, I was determined to stay positive, focusing on my support system. My family, friends, and colleagues became my lifeline, providing unwavering encouragement through the tough days.
Throughout my journey, I found strength in prayer, a positive mindset and resilience in the power of community. I became an advocate for early detection, sharing my story with others and encouraging women to prioritize their health. My openness about my diagnosis, treatment, and recovery inspired those around me, and I turned my experience into a message of hope.
By April 2023, I was declared cancer-free. I embraced this new chapter of life with a renewed sense of purpose, cherishing each moment with my loved ones and making self-care a top priority. My journey with breast cancer transformed my perspective—I became an advocate for women’s health and resolved to spread awareness about the importance of regular screenings and self-exams.
Today, I reflect on my journey with gratitude for the medical advances and the support of my family, friends & community, and I remain committed to helping others navigate their own health challenges and finding the “positively pink lining” to life’s challenges with strength and hope.
